African irises?

Hi,

I got a phone call from my stepmother yesterday.  She lives in Chicago
during the summer, but in the Sarasota (FLA) area during the winter.  In
an article in the local Sarasota paper about good perennials, the author
suggested the use of African irises.  So she called me to find out about
these, because the article didn't give any further information.  Well, I
was stumped.  I looked in the Mathew book and in the World of Irises book,
but I could find no mention of African irises.  She's going to ask at the
local botanical garden, but I figured that I'd also ask this email group.

So, does anyone know anything about these irises?  They must obviously
tolerate zone 10 heat and humidity.
