Could these be Babiana?  I just saw a large planting of these tender 
bulbs of African origin at Longwood Gardens and in reading a bit about them 
found they are members of the Iris family.  Judy Glattstein has a short 
section on them in her "American Gardener's World of Bulbs," published in 
1994.
