debbies comment sent me back to taylors and there is another genus in the
iris family that is probably it - MORAEA, or MOREA - which  have flowers
'almost exactly like IRIS which this genus replaces in the southern
hemisphere'.  taylor lists several species, including M. iridoides and M.
pavonia, the peacock iris.  all are south african herbs.

then there is SCHIZOSTYLIS COCCINEA, the crimson flag, also in the iris
family, also from south africa.
