Spring is here!

Yesterday I spent the day getting a start on cleaning the iris clumps. Our
high temperature was 68. 70 predicted for today and I'm on vacation! Over
the next 3 weeks I'll be cleaning, feeding, spraying, and getting new beds
(including those for 1998 converntion guests) ready. Most of the iris are
showing new growth. The arilbreds wintered especially well. I always find
botrytis at this time of the year and dig it out. Usually it's not fatal,
but on some first year rhizomes it can be. I was disappointed to find that I
lost Schreiners' Cascade Springs, which I was really looking forward to
growing. I will take advantage of Schreiners generous "no questions asked"
replacement policy on new rhizomes.

The reticulatas and crocuses on the south wall of the house have finished
blooming, but others are appearing in the rock gardens. The dafs are a
couple of inches tall. You can bet I'll be watching the weather reports
carefully hoping there won't be a snowstorm to interrupt my "work".
