Hi

Hello everybody,

I finally found the time and got my computer back working (got directly zapped
by an electrical storm even with surge protection) and finally subscribed to the
Iris ListServer. Looks like I've already missed a lot and there's already
several other lively discussions of irises in progress. (after having read my
30 messages).

Clarence - Hang in there! Don't let those guys in the warmer climates rub it
in. The grinch didn't steal Spring- it just arrived here in Portsmouth, VA and
I'm sending it on your way! Daffodils and crocus are in bloom down here now.
SIBS & JIs have grown at least an inch in the past two weeks. Tulips are just
peaking up out of the ground.

About six years ago I purchased Dietes vegata in New Orleans and brought it back
home with me. It survived and bloomed here in Portsmouth (Zone 8A) for three
years. Looking back at the weather files for that time it dip get down in the
teens, but they could be considered mild winters. So it MAY grow for others
further south. I've also had Neomarcia (species unknown) winter over for me
here. BUT it didn't this year. I. japonica is blooming in my greenhouse now
and made it thru the winter- so far!

I have pictures of Dietes and Neomarica and will send them to all who are
interested. What is our policy concerning sending graphics? I didn't want to
upload them without permission.

I received a letter from Terry Aitken (editor of AIS Bulletin) asking if I'd
seen anything about organic gardening with irises. He's investigating using
parasitic wasps (for purchase) to control borers, use of beneficial nematodes,
getting rid of harmful nematodes without chemicals, and using coffee grounds as
compost. Terry plans a future article incorporating these organic gardening
items and is looking for anyone with direct experience. Thought I'd bring this
to the attention of our group and see what info I can glean for him.

I'll post these questions in the gardening section of AOL, CompuServe and the
Internet also. Hopefully the info I receive will be of value to all irisarians
and send an additional signal to AIS as to the value of the Internet and our
online groups. Also, do we have any youth participating in the Iris ListServer?

Will close for now and enjoy the daffodils in bloom - and anticipate the irises
which can't be that much further behind!

Bill Smoot
