Bonnewitz's Garden Notes

Please excuse what may be an embarressing lack of iris history knowledge.
Today I happened across a pack of "Garden Notes" by Lee R. Bonnewitz, a "dry
goods merchant" who issued these things in the 1920s. Looks like he started
off collecting peonies, then irises, and the avocation grew like Topsy?

Can anyone give me some background on what I've got? TIA
