I sort of agree with Linda's comments on ratings. Catalog descriptions
could tell a lot more than they do, although I do applaud steps by
Schreiner's in this direction. When Carol Warner and I undertook the
landscape rating of Siberians, we specifically wanted to complement
the information already typically included in catalogs, and to leave
it up to the grower to make the more subjective judgments about what
flowers are more beautiful and so on.
The things I miss most in descriptions of bearded irises are vigor
(although that is sometimes mentioned, especially when it is positive),
and resistance to rot. I used to be of the opinion that we needed
large studies comparing lots of experience to sort out varietal
factors from environmental ones, and a new introduction could not
possibly have that. However, Clarence's comments about ancestry
make it tempting to jump to the conclusion that at least some rough
predictions might be possible.
