Welcome Chad!
:
: In thinking about the discussion on how to handle the large number of
:introductions and whether to consider some licensing scheme (to me a bad
:idea),
:I immediately thought of the rating system currently used for
:Rhododendrons. In
:this scheme a number rating (1 lowest to 5 highest) is applied to two
:aspects of
:a cultivar, one for flower and the other for foliage. For Irises the number
:scheme could be applied in such a way as to take into account the relative
:merits of one hybrid when compared to the current best offering in the same
:class and type. i.e. a TB blue self should be compared with other existing TB
:blue selfs and not other colors which are less well developed.
A good idea! The AIS judging system already provides for this sort of
evaluation (the current point system could be used directly or adapted).
The problem is finding a way to get all new irises systematically
evaluated by judges. This is where my test garden idea comes in. It makes
possible the most important part of my suggestion, which is essentially
the same as your idea: that each iris be rated on the *average* of
*ratings* given by the judges who evaluate it, rather than on the *total
number* of judges who happen to see it and vote for it.
Right now, the HM is basically a record of how many judges have seen
the iris, which is an utterly irrelevant piece of information.
Happy irising, Tom.
