Welcome, Sharon! The best time to transplant is six weeks to two months
after bloom. Whereabouts in New Mexico are you? The actual calendar dates
for transplanting vary a lot from the extreme south (where it can be done
as early as June), to up here in the mountains where I wait until August.

Also, people in really hot areas sometimes prefer to wait until early
fall. The irises still have plenty of time to re-establish, but they
miss the brutal summer heat that way.
