Probably a main reason that TBs nearly always win the Dykes is because
they are the most nearly universal; just about every judge voting probably
has seen them. On the other hand, my exposure to arils and PCNs, for
example, is woefully inadequate, and judges elsewhere likely have similar
problems with these and/or others.
I do like the idea of a Wister medal. I personally don't like it to
be the same thing as the Dykes, though. I think we should think of
suggestions to "rig" it otherwise, or "unrig" it, depending upon your
outlook. One that comes to my mind, although I haven't fully thought
it through, would be to make it a rule of Dykes selection that
the class that the previous year's Dykes medalist came from is
ineligible for the current year's award. With that, we would likely
get TB, xx, TB, yy, TB, zz, TB, .. which may be a grave injustice to
some deserving TBs, but at least they will have won their Wister
medal and the other kids on the block would have a chance to be
noticed.
