Greetings,
I don't know what is going on with our mail. True strangeness. Here is the
posting on We-Du again for Heather. I sent out a welcome to Vernon that has
yet to show up in my mailbox. Where do these things go, Mars? Anner

Greetings,
There has been a good deal of talk about native irises and catalogs and the
name of We-Du nurseries has been mentioned. I have no idea what, if anything,
has been said about this company before I joined the list, but I thought I
might put in my two cents worth since I have done some business with them.
We-Du Nurseries in Marion, NC, Zone 7b, which has recently been sold by the
founders Richard Weaver and Rene Duval, states that they "specialize in
nursery propagated southeastern natives, rare and unusual rock and woodland
plants; ferns, species Iris, Trilium, Epimedium, hardy orchids, and woody
ornamentals. We are particularly interested in the oriental counterparts of
our native wildflowers." The species Irises listed in the 1997 catalog
include Ii. cristata, cristata 'Alba", ensata v. spontanea, giganticaerulea,
hexagona, laevigata, prismatica, pseudacorus, pseudacorus dwarf, pseudacorus
"Variegata", sanguinea, sanguinea "Nana", sanguinea "Nana Alba", setosa,
setosa "Nana", tectorum, typhipholia, verna v. smalliana, verna v. verna,
versicolor, virginica, virginica "Alba", virginica v. shrevei. Most of these
are in the range of $4.50-6.00. In the past they have offered tridentata.
My experience is this: I have gotten excellent plants from them, lovingly
packed and shipped, but the plants were very young. They needed to be potted
up and grown on for several months before I felt they could go into the
ground. Also, I got two irises which, when they bloomed turned out to be the
wrong color, or species. This was settled to my satisfaction.
This is an interesting catalog. Certainly worth sending for if you find their
focus interesting. If you order something, make sure you also order a Viola
dissecta v. sieboldiana, a very fragrant white Japanese violet with finely
dissected leaves, and one of my very favorite plants. I've had mine for four
years.
We-Du Nurseries, Route 5, Box 724, Marion, NC 28752. Catalog: Two dollars.
