Ian mentions a guide to plant collections in the UK - it is one of several
essential guides to places to visit of a horticultural nature in the UK:
The National Collections Directory - published annually by the NCCPG
(National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens) - lists plant
reference collections, not all of which are open on a regular basis.
The Good Gardens Guide - an excellent, no-punches-pulled critical guide to UK
gardens. Also revised annually. A must.
Gardens of England and Wales Open to the Public - usually known as the
"Yellow Book" due to its distinctive cover. Private gardens open under the
National Gardens Scheme - an excellent charity that raises money for good
causes, especially for the MacMillan Nurses (who care for the terminally
ill). This book is a must for serious garden visiting.
The Plant Finder - the best UK directory of nurseries - also a must.
Available on paper or CD-ROM. Also revised annually.
All are available from the Wisley or Kew bookshops. If you are travelling in
to London by Heathrow airport, you could easily take the "tube" to Kew -
change at Hammersmith (not for the faint hearted! - you'll certainly know
that you've arrived!)
Probably a 20-30 minute journey.
