Edith Wolford is one of my favorite iris. The color pattern existed before
EW. The parents, Merry Madrigal and Freedom Road are similar to EW. What
makes EW different is the color of the falls which is much closer to true
dark blue than either parent. I repeated the Merry Madrigal X Freedom Road
cross but got nothing that approached the blueness of EW. I do not know Earth
Song (Kegerise R. 1992) but it is registered as having violet falls.Jurassic
Park (aka Jurassic Edith by some wag) does not approach the blue color of EW.
It also tends to have one bud per socket, but it is big and draws garden
visitors like a magnet. If you don't like Supreme Sultan's size, you probably
won't like Jurassic Park. I like it, but it's no replacement for Edith
Wolford.
Iris growers need to recognize that not only are they evaluating the
varieties they grow, the varieties are evaluating the grower! If something
won't grow well for you, you might consider that you might not be a growing
it well. Maybe you need to try a different location in the garden for a
particular variety; maybe it needs watering at times you do not choose to
water. Maybe it doesn't like growing in a bed with azaleas. Several varieties
which grow poorly or indifferently for me do wonderfully for Mary Dunn just
down the street. Its not the fault of the varieties, it's the way I choose to
grow iris.
Has anyone gotten the 1996 Registrations and Introductions list? Paid for
mine weeks ago and have yet to receive.
