I agree with Bill, and can back that up with personal experience.
Hardy Plant Society reached similar crisis a few years ago - more than 7000
members and the work was literally killing the volunteer executive officers.
Subs were slightly modified, a paid administrator was taken on, part time at
first, later full time. Service to members improved radically, volunteers
lived to put their energies to something more useful (i.e. the plants!) and
membership GREW to in excess of 11000 within four years.
I can think of no better recommendation for this type of action.
