Iris setosa is the only species in the genus that is native to both the
eastern and western hemispheres, as it is also found in eastern Siberia,
Korea, Japan, and extreme NE China.

Waddick in his "Iris of China" indicates that it is hardy from Zone 2
(possibly Zone 1) to the cooler parts of Zone 6. Waddick also mentions "a
beautiful white-flowered Japanese cultivar, KOSHO-EN".
