Ellen,

I'm convinced that alfalfa is generally good for plants and the soil. 
Composted manure is, too.  I should also add that I confidently tilled
Hu-More into the top 6" of soil in a new iris bed last year.  Fewer
winter weeds in that bed.  Hmmm.

I saw a picture of the machine they use to help make this stuff.  They
"row compost".  The compost material is laid out in rows about 6 ft
wide, 6 ft high and over 200 ft long.  The machine straddles a row and
turns the compost inside out as it moves down the row.  It's a
funny-looking machine, but it does good things.  There may be a similar
operation near you.  They were offering franchises.....
