Anner, Linda and others on this wonderful list,
In reviewing my notes on the Keppel seminar, I couldn't find much that
would easily fit the format of the iris-l. Here's what else I can
easily relate.
He gave a quite amusing introduction relating to his job as Registrar,
citing some of the funny names that have been registered in the past.
He noted that Jean Cayeux seemed to end all the iris names with "iere".
CONDOTTIERRE is a close example. If Jean gets a good white, would a
good name be "Frigidaiere"? And there's always "Baboon Derriere".
Next came a brief discussion on pigments, then came an hour on diploid
and tetraploid genetics. He drew diagrams that would be difficult to
reproduce here. I'm sure you could find similar ones in any text
discussing Mendel and his peas. The peas are diploids, though, and
tetraploid diagrams get more complex. Mr. Keppel does a lot of plicata
work and plicata is recessive. In tetraploids, if you cross a
non-plicata(dominant with respect to plicata) with a plicata(recessive),
trying to get a trait (let's say, the dominant amoena pattern) from the
non-plicata to the plicata, be prepared to either grow a lot of
seedlings (thousands) or have a whole lot of luck. The action really
gets going in the second generation when you might cross the siblings
together.
I'll have to leave the Median discussion for another time.
