I had a similar experience several years ago when DUKE OF EARL (a child of
your own EARL OF ESSEX) started sending up 3 stalks under the snow before
it melted and far in advance of any of the dwarfs or medians I grow (and
also far in advance of our last frost date). I nursed these stalks along
using some of the techniques mentioned on these pages in the past few days,
such as covering them with cartons, etc. They did eventually bloom, though
the stalks were somewhat frost-stunted.

I think that the indeterminate nature of the timing of bloom in rebloomers
must be responsible for this phenomenon, although I don't know exactly what
gets them started like this. It has only happened like this on this one
occasion with me.
