Intrigued by iris kochii and checking it in my Kohlein, I notice it is on the
same page as iris sambucina.
I have growing in several places on my old farm garden an iris matching this
description. It will grow and survive under any condition and not easy to
dispose of. This iris has survived the compost and placed itself back in the
garden after being weeded out. Hence, such a survivor deserves a little
respect and now is allowed to surround the outhouse not harmed by an
occasional swipe from the mowers.
There is a picture on page 184 and if there is nothing very similar to
sambucina I think that is what I have. Kohlein says "somewhat dingy
blossoms" and that is the case. Could I have iris sambucina? Would it be in
a garden in upstate New york. It has persisted through years of neglect on
this property growing in fields. It is not "pretty" but is immensely healthy
and requires no division. I wonder why it was grown when other more comely
irises have always been around?
I have plenty to spare.
