I'm sure we're all delighted you have come aboard! Loudon County is up in
Northern Virginia, which makes you one of several distinguished members of
the list from that neck of the woods! Wonderful irises grown there! What
sorts of irises do you grow?
I, too, favor recycled Christmas tree boughs as protection from winter
heaving of perennials. It's a nice use for them after the holidays. I salvage
several in the neighborhood and put the boughs around on things. Some folks
have advocated use of a brick or stone set on the rhizome to help prevent
heaving.
There is an Iris Lane down here in Richmond, too! In fact, the iris is the
Official Flower of Richmond, Virginia, and has been since the 'thirties.
