There are people on the net who delight in stirring up emotions in public
discussion groups. You can find, for example, people who post atheistic
diatribes to Christian discussion groups and others who post creationism
diatribes on evolutionary biology discussion groups. Sometimes the
perpetrators genuinely desire to express themselves and start a good
controversy; more often it's just a game to see how many people take the
bait. Sometimes it's just someone who's too inexperienced to know better.
Unfortunately, one such individual used Ian Efford's Iris-L subscription to
post an unwelcome an inappropriate message to this list. I saw the posting
when it was made yesterday, but waited to see how well it would blow over
on its own. We did pretty good, actually.
If you see something like this in the future, consider whether the poster
may be trying to manipulate you into a public display of anger. I recommend
the silent treatment as an appropriate response and a sound strategy to
prevent the escalation of irrelevant postings.
