Amt of sunshine?

As a grower of TB's I've been told they need 4-6 hours of sunshine. What 
does that mean, all year? I have a space on the north side of my 
property that gets 4 hours in the late spring, summer and early fall. 
However to the south of the area is a hill and large pine trees. 
Needless to say, in the winter the sun hangs pretty low and the area 
gets very little sun. Will they do alright there?
