Dutch Iris might indeed be a good solution for your friend's problem.  30
years ago while living in Albuquerque I found them very well adapted to the
climate.  They would slowly form clumps and not need digging or replacement
as they do here.  Also, they might be available blooming and potted at this
time of the year--for lots of money.

However, I would warn people not to buy the bagged Dutch iris bulbs now for
sale in some garden centers.  They cannot be successfully planted in the
spring.  For some strange reason, our local garden shop and many others
stock them in the spring, along with De Caen anemones, another fall
planting item that cannot succeed here with spring planting (though I
understand they can be spring planted in Britain?).
