Art,
I am not totally sure on this, but I think that the sun requirement is
most important during the time in which the Irises are actively growing. I
have some Irises by a porch on the north side of the house. They get the 4
or more hours of direct sun from March to late September. During the
winter, they get maybe two hours of sun. These Irises do fine and bloom at
the same time as Irises located away from the shadows.
