I don't want to repeat what has already be said, and very eloquently by
a few individuals; However my experiences reading newsgroups (which I do Daily)
gives me the perspective that an Iris newsgroup would not in any way be
equivalent or superior to the current Iris-L. The unmoderated newgroups are rife
with SPAM (unwanted off topic postings), vitriol from Flamers and their victims
and crossposted (posting to several newsgroups at once) off-topic posts. All we
need on Iris-L is one John Keslick Jr. ( he makes Brian Effords postings look
like love poems) and the damage could be irreparable. This list allows the
list-owner to remove such individuals where an unmoderated newsgroup does not.
Now a Moderated newsgroup is another story but this requires a dedicated
individual to read EVERY posting and then allow it to be posted to the group.
The iris-L format allows for some level of control without burdening some poor
person to this level.
Lastly I would also like to point out that there are many netizens who
only have E-mail access and no General Web access or newsgroup access. Also
newsgroups are carried by individual ISP's by their choice only and as such some
newsgroups are not available to the subscriber.
Oh and on the garden front we are spending the big bucks to have two
Monterey Pines (80-100 feet tall) removed next week so as to get some SUN in the
bulk of the yard and I wonder what I'll be planting ....
