The Walking Iris is not a true Iris, but it is in the Iris Family. The
scientific name is Neomarica gracilis. The flowers have purple standards
and white falls. Each bloom lasts only one day, but the plant blooms over
a five to six week period. The blooms have a strong pleasing fragrance.
The stems stand two to two and one half feet above the top of the pot.
This is a tender plant, so it cannot be grown in the ground. I have
mine in pots which I take out once I feel that frost is unlikely. I put it
in a place that catches the morning sun, yet is protected from the mid day
sun when it is outdoors. I bring them back in when frost is forecast in
the fall. Inside, I have them in front of larger south facing windows so
that they will catch the sun on days that are not totally gray. This is
an interesting plant.
