It's been awhile, but the ones I transplanted prior to bloom had flower
stalks a bit stunted, but were otherwise fine. Around here, digging and
selling in full bloom is the norm. Seems like they usually don't bloom the
following year, but they are usually manhandled pretty badly, roots broken
off, and very little soil when they are 'dug'. So much that I try dies
anyway, it's hard to say whether or not the death rate is higher among the
'dug in bloom' or not.
