Iris-L: Commentary

(Patricia please do not take this as a personal attack. I mean it as a
general commentary)

Ok, lets carry this out to its logical conclusion. Patricia can't grow
JIs or Sibs so we shouldn't talk about them on Iris-l. People in
southern Florida can't grow TBs, so lets not talk about TBs. Folks in
Arizona can't grow LAs so no talking about them, I can't grow SDBs and
Medians, axe them from discussions. Pick any kind of iris and I'll bet I
can find a place they won't grow.

So what do we talk about, the weather?

This is an iris list for pete's sake. An open forum. If a subject is not
interesting, use the delete key. Its the price we pay for getting all
that other good information (you know the stuff we *ARE* interested in).
We are very fortunate to have a wide diversity of interests, climates,
and individuals. The other price we pay is PARTICIPATING. If no one
participates, or groups take all their discussions off the list *no one*
gets any benefit. It is a great way to kill off the list.

Nonsense, it is no big deal to add the iris-l address to the cc: list on
a message. It is a policy issue.

What goes around, comes around. Sow and ye shall reap. The more you
contribute to the list the more you get out of it.

The argument that "we have to have a small private group before we can
have a meaningful discussion" IMHO is claptrap. Certainly, as Sharon
says, there are very few that are interested in the highly technical
discussions of chromosomes, but there are not that many subjects so
technical as to not have a wider audience (beginner or expert.)

I'll probably get flamed for this, that is one of the disadvantages in
standing on a wooden soap box. I believe in the iris-l, I have learned a
great deal from it, and I put what I can into it iris or otherwise.
Maybe I just need a life...but I would sincerely hate to see the list
wither away. I can personally point to four or five people who now have
iris interests because of the list.
