just at soil level because the tiny slugs we have here are pretty well 
concealed if they can find a spot where our wind has caused a bit of 
space to be opened between iris and soil.  My slugs do not seem to leave 
a silvery trail in the cold weather so it took a couple years for me to 
discover the little pests.
