As you specify "munched", presumably the culprit was a toothy critter. Last
year my earliest blooming bulbs (Ii. danfordiae and reticulata along with
crocuses) were mostly torn to shreds by (a) deranged bird(s). This is
something that never happened before, and fortunately has not been repeated
this year.
