Re: CLUBS: Was--Re: Free Irises!!

Siouxland Iris Society uses a combination of other methods some of
you have described. For TBs and medians we place orders with a
couple different growers every year for our club sale, which is in
mid- to late-July for our area. These are auctioned to anyone at our
sale, usually going at a good bit below retail, if they are 5 years
old or less, and almost all of them are. In a few years their
children come back to the sale, this time on our our sale tables,
where prices vary depending on the intro. date. If still 5 yr. or
less, they get auctioned along with the new order. Works great, both
by enabling members to plant new things they might otherwise not be
able to afford, and by returning increase in a couple years to give
others the chance to get still-pretty-new things. The club also
orders Siberians and sometimes spurias for a later delivery, and
these are distributed free, according to some sort of lottery system,
to the members. It's become sort of our reward to ourselves for the
hard work done to make the show and the earlier sale a success. That
has really helped to spur interest among the members, including yours
truly, in these other-than-bearded types, and we all now are growing
a lot more of them than we got just by this free method.
