CULT: % of losses

Dana Brown asked:
<I would like to ask everyone what their percentage of loss is on an
<average year.

Speaking primarily of tall bearded iris - Back when I was still ordering on
the basis of pictures or descriptions, I would estimate percentage of loss
was maybe 30%? 50%? Percentage of bloom was considerably less than 50%. My
losses are much lower and percentage of bloom higher now that I am more
analytical about what I order, swap, etc (region of origin, previous local
survival, ancestry, advice of suppliers, season of bloom). Most are lost to
soft rot, some to botrytis when I first plant them (rare), some to the
mysterious molligrubs (wasting disease). My big rot season starts during and
after bloom season, so it's too soon to tell how last year's aquisitions will
do, but so far only one has disappeared for sure, and I think it got carried
off by a varmint.

Siberians, dwarfs and standard dwarfs - losses are very high. Until last
year, each bare root siberian I got died (4 out of 4 over several years). Of
the ones that I bought last year, it looks like half of them died. Lousianas
and Japanese seem to have 100% survival so far (not a full year for either
yet).
