It's usually a sign of too rapid growth, which happens whenever there's a spell
of unseasonably warm weather. It seems to affect whatever stalks were just
about the break out above the leaves when the warm weather hit. Sometimes it
affects the arils, sometimes the medians, sometimes the arilbreds, sometimes the
TBs. Spring in southern New Mexico is quite erratic. Specific types could
certainly be affected more consistently in other climates.
