Hi everyone - up to my neck in real work.
Raised beds: usually only a few inches above surrounding ground. For bearded
irises they improve drainage - vital to prevent soft rot in areas with more
than average rainfall (say 30" plus per annum). We switched to raised beds
here about four seasons ago - cut losses through rot by 50%. Our beds are
made by our tractor and a special (home-made) implement which drags through
the ground behind it, raising the bed by about three inches only - just
enough for the water to get away.
Hope this improves your understanding.
