This surprises me. If I understood correctly, the roots were eaten. We have
pocket gophers which will certainly eat the roots and bottoms of rhizomes of
bearded iris but I have never found any action among the Siberians.
The only damage I have ever noticed on Siberians is I think due to
strawberry weevils. Small notches chewed off the edges of the leaves. The
damage is minimal and seems to be confined to certain cultivars. Perhaps
there are differences in leaf texture or something. One which seems to be
particularly tasty is "Silver Rose".
