I have not tried I missouriensis but this is not uncommon with many seeds.

I generally routinely chill most seeds with the exception of immediate
epigeal lily seeds. The seeds of bearded iris, PCN, and Siberians have to be
checked fairly frequently after about four weeks or they will germinate in
the container.

I have had one seed of atropurpurea germinate this spring and I believe that
it would have done so in the frig had it been left a bit longer. It was
definitely showing signs of life when I planted it.

My method is to put the seeds in barely moist sand in film cannisters. These
are then put into plastic tubs. I have always thought that the refrigerator
was invented for keeping seeds and dog food cool. Sometimes a bit of
subterfuge helps though. If you label the tub as containing left over stew
and put it at the back it will usually work.
