Phyllis,
I live in the south (South Carolina) and I also have the SDB, MAKING EYES,
which I ordered from Schreiner's in 1995. The first spring (1996) in my
garden it did not bloom, but grew and increased well. It just finished
blooming for me this week and I have to say that I was a little let down.
The contrast between the standards and falls wasn't nearly as intense as
pictured in the Schreiner catalog. It almost made me wonder if I had
received the correct iris. The dark red-purple falls pictured in the
catalog turned out to be a light reddish-purple spot on a white fall. The
nice white rim around the falls shown in the catalog seemed a little
smudged and didn't really stand out. Maybe I'm too far south for this one
or the pH of my soil has thrown the colors off. I'm sure that if I had not
purchased it based on it's photo (I've learned my lesson:) I would find it
a perfectly charming little iris. It does seem to be a good grower and it
is a pretty flower.
On the subject of SDB's, I think I'll need to add some more of these cuties
next year. I've especially been impressed with JEWEL BABY, a dark purple
plum color with dark purple beards (very rich looking). It has bloomed so
much for such a small plant. I want some more SDB's with this kind of
vigor and flower production. I recall that BABY BLESSED was recommended.
Anyone else care to chime in with their favorite SDB? To focus the
question, if you could only have one SDB in your garden which would it be
and why? I know, this is so original, but humor those of us who are
beginners.:)
