Your description doesn't sound like a cutworm. They look like medium-sized
gray or brown caterpillars with a hard, dark brown head. I suspect that
what you have found is in fact a slug.
Slugs can make small holes and notches in leaves.
Unless this seems like a serious problem, just do nothing and it will
probably go away.
