Is there any chance that what you are looking for is a Japanese iris called
THE GREAT MOGUL (Payne.1957)? Nicholls Gardens describes this as a "large
stately blackish purple" in their 1997 catalog, which is yours for a dollar.
Clarence Mahan once recommended this one during a slide talk an the slide was
splendid!
