I also believe it to be linked with a cold snap. It does not always affect the
same cultivar, but rather a number of them open with malformed flowers at the
same time. This pattern is easy to spot with New Mexico's erratic spring
weather -- in a more stable climate it seems quite reasonable that the same
cultivars might be affected, year after year.
