BLUE POOLS is the only SDB among the ones I grow that routinely produces
flowers with extra parts. In light of Graham's hypothesis in the last
sentence quoted above (endorsed by Sharon Mc Allister in a separate
posting), it may be significant that BLUE POOLS is almost always the first
SDB to come into bloom here (while frosty nights are still common).

BTW, I don't think B>P> is quite old enough to be labeled "ancient", as it
does not even qualify as "historic" (it was introduced in 1973).
