Sydney B. Mitchell wrote in "Iris for Every Garden" (published in 1949):
"For many years writers always recommended for (bearded) irises a soil on
the alkaline side and where this did not exist suggested the incorporation
of lime or broken plaster as a corrective. Unquestionably irises are being
grown in many places on soils which contain considerable lime, but it is
now generally accepted that they are happier in neutral soil or one
slightly acid."

Perhaps opinions have changed again,  but I am not aware of it.
