I had a stalk of WITH CASTANETS showing about 1/2 inch of the bud on Saturday,
so I decided to cut it and force it to bloom for Easter. Evidently SDBs don't
force quite as readily as TBs, though. I used the same procedure I go through
every year to get recalcitrant TBs to open for shows--warmish water and lights
all night, but it still wasn't open in time. It is this morning, though, and
it's looking its little perky self, along with a sprig of blooming basil
(houseplant).
My actual question is this: has anybody had WITH CASTANETS actually bloom at
SDB height? This is the third year's bloom here for me, and it has never
bloomed over 8 inches. This one is just over six inches, even allowing for
the fact I didn't cut it quite down to the rhizome (close!). It also blooms
very early for me, and in fact is the first bearded iris to bloom here this
year, 'way ahead of even any of the MDBs. I tend to think of it more as a
large-flowered MDB than an SDB.
Barb, in Santa Fe, where there's another silly snow storm on the horizon,
though nothing like the Nor'easter the New England area is getting creamed by.
