Steve--that is a lot of trophies! I daresay most shows do not offer as
many "special" awards. You can learn a lot about shows (both good and
bad!) by attending some in different Regions, clubs--, whereever you can
find them. Each one is probably just a bit different.
Region 2 shows used to be by color, also. In the past five years or so,
all have switched to the cultivar method. It does simply trying to figure
out where an iris should be, since one person's "blue" is anothers "purple"
and some irises are a real challenge to classify colorwise.
Your show committee should certainly follow the guidelines in the Handbook
for Judges and Show Officials--but after that, there is plenty of room for
variation and individuality in producing a show. Region 2 has several
"Memorial" type awards...the William McGarvey Award for best beardless
iris, the Ruth V. Blenis Award for best TB, Magdalene Award for best
Median. And individual clubs add to that--the Western NY group has the
Mary Pat Engle award for "Best Pink."
Even if you don't get all the trophies back--there's always next year!
Showing does involve a good degree of luck, though it certainly helps to do
everything you can to improve your luck! :-)
Dorothy Fingerhood ( who finally got the Blenis Award this season after
showing for about....10 ?, 15 ?, omigosh..... years).
