Well, it takes me about 3 1/2 hours to get to the other end of the state
here, so, in comparison, they are only a few miles from you. All is
relative <g>.
I know of which you speak. The climate is different up on the hill where
my parents live, as compared to the bottom. In a normal spring, we can
still have snow up on the hill while it is raining down street from the
house. Spring takes a wee bit longer to arrive on the hill.
Oh yeah, I probably should add to the tag "Now in zone 6/7 in Northern VA."

Just a minor correction, I am 4 hours N. of Boston (depending
on the weather) and at least 3 1/2 hours and 140 miles N. of Worcester.
The New Hampshire border is a few miles from Central Mass. not
the upper fourth of the state. I am a few miles from Quebec. We are
closer to Montreal than Boston in mileage and driving time.
Gardens can be so different with many variables that we can only
write of our own experience. That is one of the features of being
on a list with such divergent climates, topography, soils and trees.
Come up this way to see out stately weeping willows that form one of
the focal points around our back gardens. Our only complaint is the
masses of late falling autumn leaves. :-)
