Greetings from Kansas!
=20
I have been growing iris most of my life. I grew up in the Ozarks in =
south central Missouri where gardening is a necessary part of every day =
life. After college, I moved to Oklahoma where I was introduced to the =
world of Iris. Marriage, a family and a new job landed me here in =
Wichita where all my gardening abilities have been put to the test. =20
=20
Twelve years ago I decided to do something about a large bed of iris in =
my back yard that never bloomed. I went to a local AIS sponsored Iris =
Show to get some information and have never been the same since. The =
old iris were trashed and I began with a new planting of fifty "newer" =
TB hybreds. I have since added some 300 different varities including =
TB's, MTB's, MDB's, SDB's, IB's, LA's, Species and a few of my own =
seedlings.
=20
My favorites are MTB's. =20
=20
As I became interested in hybredizing, I decided that the best way to =
know iris and their qualities was to become a judge. I am now serving =
my sixth year as an AIS garden judge. What a joy!
=20
I am particularly interested in exchanging information with hybredizers =
and those interested in MTB's.
=20
The past three years here on the Great Plains have brought very =
temperamental spring weather with late freezes and hail that have nearly =
destroyed the TB bloom. There seems to be far less damage done to my =
MTB's and the older duploids. I think that we have lost a lot of vigor =
in reaching for color breaks and larger longer lasting bloom. I would =
love to see more hybredizers concentrate on hardiness as well as =
improving the bloom.
=20
I'm looking forward to hearing from you all, and some interesting =
reading.
=20
Jon Marc.
