Jon Marc -- Welcome to Iris-L. You're right that the older diploids --
and also the older tetraploids -- seem to be hardier. Breeding for
hardiness is a tough order, since it's an even longer-term process than
breeding for flower form, branching, colors, etc. But have a go at it!
I forget who our MTB fanciers on the List are, but they'll let you
know. Two in our Washington area are Clarence Mahan and Dick Sparling.
Clarence is too busy to be on the List right now, and Dick never has
signed on. But they're reachable if you have questions for them
sometime.
