Howdy Peoples,
My name is Paul Tyerman. I feel compelled to finally put my Bio up after
reading your queries about Gumboots etc. I'm another Australian. I live
in Canberra (the capital of Australia) and I'm very interested in irises
(Gee what a surprise given that I have subscribed to this list).
Ok. My Bio......... Hmmmmmmmmm!!
I'm pretty well interested in all things Iris (and this also extends to
associated families such as Moraeas, Dietes etc.). I grow Tall Beardeds,
Medians and Dwarfs (I think you call these Dwarf Tall Bearded). I rather
love the Arils, but they are so hard to get hold of over here. SYRIAN
PRINCESS which is pictured on the ASI home page is absolutely spectacular.
I'd love more of them, but haven't found anywhere to get a good supply of
them over here.
Other than the Tall Beardeds I grow numerous different species (in fact
any that I can hold of ), particularly loving the miniatures. I think my
favourite would have to be the Reticulatas as they really are so rewarding
and cute. I have a couple of tiny bulbs of I. danfordiae but have never
been able to find it for sale again to get more. I'd love to get into more
of the bulbous (histrioides, junos and whatever else I can lay my hands on)
but again, they aren't that readily available.
I also have a nice collection of Californians, plus Siberians, Japanese,
laevigatas, and heaps of species.
I have done a little bit of hybridising of the Tall Beardeds, but this
will only be my second generation flowering this year. Somehow I doubt
there'll be anything earthshattering amongst them (but the excitement in
waiting is still great).
My climate here is pretty well perfect for irises. Summer gets up to a
maximum of around 39'C and this year has been a recent record. Last Friday
we had the hottest March day in 70 years when we hit 37'C and that is
REALLY hot for this time of year. I think I can remember what rain looks
like, but I'm not absolutely certain. I think its that wet stuff that
falls from the sky isn't it?? Our winters are usually down to -6 or -7'C
but we have been known to get down to -10'C.
Anyhow, I'd best not make this any longer. Its supposed to be a Bio, not
a novel. If any of you know places where seed can be obtained that is OK'd
for Australia then I'd possibly be interested in contacting them. I'd
rather have rhizomes but I think there are three chances of getting them
into Australia...... Buckley's, zero, or a much bigger bank balance. I
actually have a goal to one day get hold of I. iberica "Elegantissima"
which is a native of Turkey. Looks like a Tall Bearded to some degree with
pristine white standards and chocolate brown falls (well the picture looks
like that anyway. Maybe one of you out there knows where I can get hold of
some??).
I'll leave it there. I look forward to hearing from you all.
Cheers. Paul Tyerman
