There recently was a thread on the topic of whether members of AIS Sections
should have to be AIS members. There were good points on both sides, but the way
the rules stand now, they do. (But folks _can_ join a cooperating society and
not be an AIS member.)
The minutes of the fall AIS board meeting contain some further info:
1) It is fine for an AIS Section to have non-voting subscribers at the same
cost as membership.
2) (and this is the biggie ;-) If dues are paid by credit card, AIS will cover
the fee for Sections but not for cooperating societies.
It seems to me that there is not sufficient reason to change the rules so as to
allow membership in a Section without membership in AIS.
