Barry is probably following the guidelines of the American Iris
Society(AIS), since I believe his introductions are now eligible for
awards. The AIS has specific classes that iris have to fall into.
There are four classes of medians. Border Bearded, Intermediate,
Miniature Tall and Standard Dwarf. Minature dwarfs are in another
catagory and are not classified as medians. If you are truly interested
in learning more details of the AIS classification then purchase the
"Handbook for Judges and Show Officials" and "The World of Iris" both
published by AIS. Contact Irv & Nancy Pocklington, 609 Harrington St,
Carlinville, IL 62626-1230. Phone: (217)-854-2184.

Is there genetically any different (by this I

Basically Yes but time of bloom is also a factor. However many species
are behind our modern cultivars and the World of Iris will give you a
good history lesson.

I'm not sure of "Buzz Me" but I have Zing Me and it is classified by AIS
as an intermediate bearded. An example from the AIS Judges Handbook:
Plants 41 to 70cm (16 to 27 inches); stalks nonflexuous, branched and
extending above erect foliage; blooms 9 to 12.5 cm(3 1/2 to 5 inches)
wide; blooming period intermediate between that of the standard dwarf
and tall bearded irises.

Yes and you will too if you purchase the above two books.
